The Power of Affirming Care in SUD Recovery

October 29 | 12:00 - 1:00 PM

Webinar

Affirming care is more than a value—it is a vital practice that directly impacts recovery outcomes for people with substance use disorders. This presentation will explore the principles and practical application of affirming care, with a focus on how addiction professionals can create treatment environments that are inclusive, culturally responsive, and identity-affirming. Participants will learn how affirming practices support engagement, retention, and healing in SUD services, and how small but intentional changes can make a meaningful difference in client experiences and long-term recovery.

A few learning objectives:

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  1. Define affirming care and describe its role in substance use disorder (SUD) recovery.

  2. Identify three key principles of affirming care that can be applied in treatment and peer support settings.

  3. Apply practical strategies to create more inclusive and supportive environments for diverse clients.

About the presenter: Hallie Burchinal (she/they) is the founder of CAT Spokane, and is now the founder and Executive Director of the Center for Growth and Empowerment (CGE), a nonprofit behavioral health organization in Spokane, Washington. She has more than a decade of experience in the substance use disorder field, including leadership at Compassionate Addiction Treatment and the launch of CGE’s Rainbow Recovery program. Hallie is passionate about building affirming, community-connected care environments that center dignity, inclusion, community, and belonging as essential elements of recovery.
